This striking vintage French poster reproduces Théophile Alexandre Steinlen’s iconic 1898 Chat Noir design, originally created to advertise the exhibition of the celebrated Chat Noir cabaret collection at the Hôtel Drouot in Paris. Steinlen (1859–1923), a Swiss-born artist who became immersed in Montmartre’s bohemian life, produced over 400 illustrations and posters for magazines, cabarets, and music halls. His work is celebrated for its warmth, humanity, and technical mastery, with cats—his favourite subject—becoming enduring motifs within his graphic art. This Chat Noir image remains one of the most recognisable and beloved posters of the Belle Époque.
