About Lourdes & Marie-Bernadette Soubirous

Featured in the photos above is a studio portrait of Marie-Bernadette Soubirous, aged 14, in her daily attire (c. 1 January 1858).

Lourdes is a small market town nestled in the foothills of the Pyrénées, within the Hautes-Pyrénées department of the Midi-Pyrénées region in south-western France. Before 1858, the town was best known for its fortified castle, perched on a rocky escarpment at its centre.

In 1858, Lourdes gained international significance following a series of Marian apparitions witnessed by the young peasant girl Bernadette Soubirous, who was later canonized. These events transformed Lourdes into one of the world’s most important sites of Catholic pilgrimage and religious tourism. Today, the town welcomes approximately six million visitors annually from around the globe. This steady stream of pilgrims has made Lourdes France’s second most visited city for tourism, after Paris, and the third most important Catholic pilgrimage site, following Rome and the Holy Land.

The Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette Soubirous on eighteen occasions at Lourdes. During one apparition, she instructed Bernadette to dig in the ground, which produced a small spring of water. Though the water has no scientifically verified curative properties, countless miracle cures have been reported over the years, including healings of paralysis, blindness, cancers, and nervous disorders. Within the first fifty years, an estimated 4,000 cures were documented, though the actual number is likely much higher. Pilgrims today continue to bathe in the spring’s flowing waters, maintaining Lourdes’ reputation as a site of spiritual healing.

The 150th Jubilee of the first apparition was celebrated on 11 February 2008, with an outdoor Mass attended by approximately 45,000 pilgrims.

Marie-Bernadette Soubirous was born in Lourdes on 7 January 1844 and passed away in Nevers, France, on 16 April 1879, at the age of 35.
