Nefertiti (ca. 1370 BC - ca. 1330 BC) was the Great Royal Wife (chief consort) of the Egyptian Pharaoh Akhenaton.
Nefertiti and her husband were known for a religious revolution, in which they worshiped one god only, Aten, or the sun disc. She was made famous by her bust (featured photo). The bust is one of the most copied works of ancient Egypt. It was attributed to the sculptor Thutmose, and it was found in his workshop. It’s believed that Nefertiti ruled briefly as Neferneferuaten after her husband's death and before the accession of Tutankhamen, although this identification is to date somehow uncertain.

Nefertiti was the bride of Akhenaten. Together, their lasting impression on Western Civilization is that they popularized a prototypical form of monotheism that was focused on worship of the sun. Her political influence was disproportionately great because she was incredibly intelligent and talented in statesmanship, which filled a void because her husband was too enraptured by his idiosyncratic religiosity to really administer an effective government. As far as Western Civilization goes, she was one of the earlier and most important examples of the woman wearing the pants in a dynastic marriage. Her historical legacy is compounded by the fact that her likeness was captured in life, so her beauty could be appreciated for millennia after her death.
