About the mask of Tutankhamoun
The funerary mask of Tutankhamun is crafted from over 10 kilograms of gold and symbolises the young king’s divine authority over Upper and Lower Egypt. Decorated with lapis lazuli, obsidian, turquoise and other precious materials, the mask reflects both royal power and spiritual protection. Inscriptions from the Book of the Dead are engraved on the back, guiding the king safely into the afterlife under the protection of the gods.

Behind the splendour of the mask was a fragile young ruler who suffered from illness and physical deformities. Tutankhamun died young after a short reign marked by political instability following the controversial religious reforms of his father, Akhenaten. With no surviving heirs and an unfinished tomb, his death marked the decline of Egypt’s 18th Dynasty.
