This modern amulet from Egypt shows the many ways a piece of jewelry can carry protective meaning. Although the hand has five fingers, the two outer fingers are depicted differently, leaving the three inner fingers to be decorated in their own way. In this manner, the significant number three is also integrated into the power of this amulet. To add to the meaning of the amulet, the words 'El Hamd L’ellah' are inscribed in the palm, making it an even stronger composition against negative or dark energy, evil eye or/and envy.

Cultural significance - also known as the Khamsa (Arabic for "five") is a palm-shaped amulet popular throughout North Africa, and commonly used in jewellery and wall hangings. Depicting the open right hand, an image recognized and used as a sign of protection in many societies throughout history, the khamsa is believed to provide defence against the evil eye. It is also known as the hand of Fatima, so named to commemorate Muhammad's daughter Fatima Zahra. Levantine Christians call it the hand of Mary, for the mother of Jesus. Following its incorporation into Jewish tradition via its widespread use in the Islamic world, it was also renamed the hand of Miriam for Miriam, sister of Moses.

The Khamsa icon has also evolved to become regarded as sacred and respected symbol in Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Shamanism, Jain beliefs and in Anatolia. In its simplest form, the symbol for Khamsa is the hand. It is a talismanic symbol that they believed would protect them from harm against the evil forces and bring them goodness, abundance, fertility, luck and good health. Khamsa is an icon used by man as a defence, in his struggle against the forces of evil.
