PRINT by L S LOWRY - 'Waiting for the Shops to Open'

‘Waiting for the shops to Open’ was painted by L.S Lowry in 1943.

L.S. Lowry (1887-1976) featured in the above photos, is one of Britain's best loved artists, and his distinctive style captured the busy working lives of industrial city life in northern England. Lowry is recognised for his portrayals of busy urban landscapes filled with stylised figures often referred to as 'matchstick men'. For this painting Lowry has depicted an everyday street scene in wartime Britain as customers queue outside of a greengrocer (Fish and Fruit). Lowry often embedded personal references into his art, for example the shop number in this painting is 117 which was the same number as his house.
