The Giza Pyramids are located about an hour away from Cairo CBD (central business district) called 'Downtown' in Cairo.

These days (due to new regulations) it is harder to venture on your own in the zone (Pyramids), but you can book and take a tour on horse-back or camel with a certified/official guide, and if you do not like to ride neither of the 4 legged beauties in case of a bad lower-back or fear of great heights; (camel) that is, you can always do it on foot... as long as you are accompanied and assisted by an Egyptian PAID guide (of course) - it's their livelihood. It’s another method of creating new jobs and opportunities for the unemployed... looking at it constructively.
