Symbolism of the Scarab (Kheper)

Appearance
The iconic scarab seen in ancient Egyptian amulets is based on the sacred dung beetle (Scarabaeus sacer), revered for its habit of rolling a dung sphere across the ground and burying it. The female scarab laid her eggs inside the ball, and the larvae fed within until fully grown—emerging as if created from nowhere. Because of this astonishing life cycle, scarabs became one of the most celebrated symbols in Egyptian culture, appearing in millions of artefacts, amulets and seals throughout ancient history.

Meaning & Spiritual Significance
To the ancient Egyptians, the scarab represented spontaneous creation and rebirth. It was worshipped as “Kheper(a)”, meaning “he who has come forth.”

The scarab was linked to the creator god Atum and carried powerful solar symbolism. Just as the beetle rolled its ball across the earth, the scarab-god Kheper was believed to push the sun across the sky—renewing it each day.

During the New Kingdom and beyond, heart scarabs were placed over the chest of the mummified dead. These amulets were inscribed with spells asking the heart to “not stand as a witness against me” during the final judgement. The scarab was therefore a profound emblem of truth, protection and eternal life.
